As an employer you will be well aware of the need to provide facilities for disabled people who are either employed by you, or who may be visiting your premises. Having said that, this can be a confusing area as the law is not exactly black and white when it comes to disabled toilet facilities, but there are legal guidelines which you will need to meet.

The Disability Discrimination Act of 1995 requires companies to supply reasonable provision for disabled people, but unfortunately employers are sometimes unaware of what ‘reasonable provision’ actually entails.

One thing which is clear is that the minimum dimensions for a disabled toilet cubicle is 2.2 metres by 1.8 metres, and the cubicle must have a turning circle of 1.5 metres diameter so that a wheelchair user can move around easily.

According to the Department for Work and Pensions, ten million people in the UK are considered disabled, so having the right facilities in the workplace – including lockers which can be easily reached – is essential.

If you are still unsure about the exact provision you have to make for disabled staff and visitors to the workplace, you can find plenty of information on the Government website which should hopefully make things a little clearer.

If you are looking for lockers, cubicles and other items which can be used by both able bodied and disabled staff, then why not go to www.prospec.co.uk where you will find a fantastic range of products, and at great prices.
